Top Tech Needs As A Digital Nomad

Jacquee Kurdas

As a digital nomad, technology is your lifeline, it's essential for staying connected, productive, and efficient while on the move. From laptops and smartphones to VPNs and cloud storage, there are a variety of tools and devices that can help you stay on top of your work and make your nomadic lifestyle more manageable. Here are some of the top technology essentials you'll need as a full-time digital nomad:

  1. A Reliable Laptop: A high-quality laptop is one of the most essential tools for any digital nomad. You'll need a machine that can handle everything from basic word processing and email to more demanding tasks like video editing and graphic design. Look for laptops with fast processors and long battery life so you can work uninterrupted for hours on end. PRO TIP: I use my iPad as a second screen, and as a smaller computer for offline work.

  2. A Smartphone: A smartphone is another must-have tool for digital nomads. You'll need a device that can keep you connected and productive while on the move. Look for a phone with a large, high-resolution display and a fast processor, so you can easily navigate apps and work on documents. A good camera can also be helpful if you're planning on using your phone to take photos and videos.

  3. A VPN: A VPN, or Virtual Private Network, is an essential tool for maintaining your online security while working remotely. A VPN encrypts your internet connection and masks your IP address, making it much more difficult for hackers to access your data. This is particularly important if you're working on public Wi-Fi networks. It also helps with our work - to research or search things in the states versus a foreign country. We use it to hack streaming networks to watch shows that are available in other countries. I use NordVPN and I am happy with its functionality overall.

  4. Cloud Storage: Cloud storage is a must-have for digital nomads, as it allows you to easily store and access your files from any device, anywhere in the world. Popular cloud storage services like Dropbox, Google Drive, and iCloud allow you to store and share documents, photos, and videos, so you can easily collaborate with team members and clients. This is especially useful if you're traveling with multiple devices and need to access your files on the go. My business uses Google Workspace, and I use iCloud for my personal items and photos.

  5. Power Bank: To ensure your devices last as long as you are traveling or working, you will want to carry a portable power bank or external battery. With a power bank, you can charge your phone, laptop, or any other device. Look for one with high capacity ensuring multiple charges. My favorite "ABC" of working from the road is: "Always Be Charging".

  6. Wireless headphones/microphone: Having a good-quality headset can make a huge difference in the quality of your conversations and can also help with background noise while working in public spaces. I have been really happy with my noise-canceling Airpods, but there are comfort benefits to headsets that do not go into your ears.

  7. An ergonomic mouse: A mouse is an essential tool for many digital nomads, but it's important to remember that your comfort matters too. An ergonomic mouse is designed to support a natural hand position and can help reduce pain and discomfort caused by prolonged use. I have used Jelly Comb trackball mouse for years and have been enormously happy with its Bluetooth capabilities, charge life, and ease of use.

There are two accessories that not every digital nomad needs, but I use for an ergonomic set-up:

  1. Keyboard: My wireless, rechargeable keyboard enables me to set up ergonomic use of space, especially when I use my laptop stand (see below). I also use the number pad often when preparing budgets for clients, so this extension is a great option for more complex work needs.

  2. Laptop stand: Not technically technology, but this accessory is a favorite among many nomads. Critical for ergonomic workspace, having a portable, collapsible stand helps your video height for meetings. Some stands are well-suited to work from weird places like the couch or a small table. I have been really happy with my Roost, but there are many options on the market.

Being a digital nomad means being able to work from anywhere, and to do that, you need to have the right technology to make your life easy and efficient. The above-mentioned tools and devices will help you stay productive, connected, and secure while on the move. Be sure to do your research and find the best options that fit your budget and needs.
