If you're looking to explore the world beneath the waves, then the PADI Open Water Course is the perfect starting point. This internationally recognized certification allows you to dive to depths of up to 18 meters, and is the first step to becoming a certified scuba diver.

The certification program takes an average of 4-5 days to complete. The course is broken down into two parts:
eLearning
Practical portion
The eLearning portion covers the theory of diving, such as dive physics and dive equipment, and it can be completed online at your own pace prior to the practical portion. This part of the course could take between 10-15 hours to complete and is designed to be interactive and engaging. Each lesson has clear and concise content, photos and diagrams when appropriate, and an opportunity to test your knowledge retention with every chapter. The course covers a range of subjects, including dive physics, dive equipment, dive planning, and dive safety. It also covers dive skills such as clearing your mask, regulator recovery and controlling your buoyancy. Additionally, the course also covers environmental considerations and dive planning, as well as dive safety and problem management. I completed the course at my own pace over the course of a few days, a friend completed it in one day. We both passed with flying colors because this course was designed for you to succeed.
The practical portion of the course consists of four open water dives, during which you will practice all of the basic scuba diving skills you learned in your eLearning course.
To prepare for the PADI Open Water Course, it is recommended to start studying the eLearning materials before the practical portion of the course, this will give you a good foundation and make it easier to understand the material during the practical part. When it comes to testing, it is recommended to practice and review the material, as well as to use additional resources such as study guides, flashcards, and practice quizzes. The practice quizzes provided through the eLearning course were really helpful, especially when cramming. The practical portion of the PADI Open Water Course consists of pool dives (contained dives) and four open water dives. During these dives, you'll learn and practice the basic skills needed to dive safely and confidently, such as clearing your mask, regulator recovery, and controlling your buoyancy. You'll also have the opportunity to explore the underwater world and experience the thrill of scuba diving for the first time.

I highly recommend Intrinity Divers, based in Canggu. In my experience, they were affordable, professional and well-organized. The course instructor made me feel confident and safe in and out of the water. Communication over WhatsApp was detailed and clear. They took photos of animals and divers when it was safe to do so. I loved that lunch and snacks were included; this is not common for most dive courses. What's more, they were able to customize our diving course to accommodate our travel needs and holiday rushes. Our schedule was as follows:
(eLearning on your own)
Day 1: Confined water dives (in a local pool)
Day 2: Tulamben, the site of the USAT Liberty Shipwreck
Day 3: Padang Bai, Blue Lagoon
